Does Bitpanda report to the German tax office?
Providers operating through a company authorised in the EU fall under the reporting obligation of the Crypto-Asset Tax Transparency Act (Kryptowerte-Steuertransparenzgesetz). In January 2025, Bitpanda became the first major trading venue to receive MiCAR authorisation from BaFin. For you, this means: assume that your transactions there are recorded — and do not expect Bitpanda to prepare your German tax return for you. The platform’s tax report only applies to Austria.

What DAC8 means for Bitpanda users
The reporting obligation is linked to the provider’s category, not to its name. Bitpanda operates in Europe through several companies; BaFin (the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority) granted the MiCAR authorisation in January 2025 to the German Bitpanda Asset Management GmbH. Through the EU passport it applies in all member states — Bitpanda itself described it as an authorisation “across 27 countries”.
We do not say whether and to what extent Bitpanda actually reports — that would be a claim about another company that cannot be verified from the outside. What can be said: the category fits, and it is therefore reasonable to assume that the tax authorities know or will know about your transactions.
Which data the Crypto-Asset Tax Transparency Act (Kryptowerte-Steuertransparenzgesetz) covers and from when reports are made is explained on our page on DAC8 and the reporting obligation.
The tax report only applies to Austria
Bitpanda provides an annual tax report as a PDF in the account under “Reports and Statements” — but, according to its own information, expressly only for users who are tax resident in Austria. Each report covers the previous calendar year and is available in February of the following year; reports are available from the year 2024.
This is the most common misconception about this platform: if you are resident in Germany, you simply will not find the “Tax Reports” item in your account — and some people conclude from this that there is nothing to declare. That conclusion is wrong. Tax liability in Germany does not depend on whether a provider issues you a report.
What is available to German users instead
- Quarterly account statements in the “Reports and Statements” section.
- An annual statement on request.
- The transaction history for any period you choose under “Reports and Statements → Transaction history”.
For the calculation, the transaction history is what counts. Account statements are overviews, not a list of transactions — no holding period can be derived from them.
Which exports Bitpanda itself provides
According to the helpdesk, the account history can be downloaded as a CSV and as a PDF file. According to this description, both contain “all activities and details of your account, such as purchases, sales and transactions in both crypto and fiat currencies”. Alternatively, you can generate an API key through which an analysis tool retrieves the history directly, without files having to be moved back and forth manually.
- Format either CSV or PDF — for the calculation you need the CSV file; the PDF is for viewing only.
- The period can be chosen freely. Choose it generously: for the holding period, the date of acquisition counts, and it is often years before the sale.
- An API key replaces the manual export — it should be revoked again afterwards.
An export covering “the last year” is the classic mistake. If you bought in 2019 and sold in 2026, the annual export only shows the sale — and without the acquisition, neither the holding period nor the gain can be proven. Export the entire period since the account was opened, even if this makes the file large.
Typical pitfalls with Bitpanda data
Several asset classes in one account
Bitpanda holds crypto assets, precious metals and Bitpanda Stocks in the same account. According to Bitpanda’s own product description, Bitpanda Stocks are contracts that replicate an underlying share or ETF — for tax purposes, therefore, something different from buying the security and regularly something different from a crypto asset. If you feed the full export unfiltered into a crypto analysis tool, you mix up matters that belong apart. Separate the asset classes before any calculation is done.
No German tax withheld at source
With a domestic bank, withholding tax on capital income (Kapitalertragsteuer) is withheld and paid over. With a provider without a German paying agent, this does not happen — the income has to be stated in the tax return. The fact that nothing was deducted is not a sign that there is nothing to declare; it is exactly the other way round.
Account statement instead of transaction history
The quarterly statements are provided automatically and look like a finished record. However, they are an overview and not a transaction-by-transaction list. To determine acquisition dates, holding periods and gains, there is no way around the transaction history for the entire period.
How such raw data can be combined into a robust calculation is described in our article on crypto data preparation and tax reports (in German). The substantive basics are set out in the crypto tax guide.
What to do if earlier years have not been declared
The data situation at Bitpanda is comparatively good: the history can be retrieved for any period, and it is contained in full in a single export. The effort lies in separating the asset classes and in allocating the acquisitions — not in obtaining the data.
What matters is the timing, not the data situation. A voluntary disclosure (Selbstanzeige) under Section 371 of the German Fiscal Code (AO) can only take effect as long as no ground for exclusion (Sperrgrund) has arisen — and it must be complete, otherwise exemption from punishment is lost entirely, not in part. That is why the calculation comes first and the filing second, never the other way round.
Requirements, grounds for exclusion and the procedure are set out on our page on the crypto voluntary disclosure.

Have your Bitpanda history prepared
An export covering the entire period is sufficient as a basis. We separate the asset classes and tell you which years are open and what follows from this.
